A potential idea for an opening title sequence

➢ Inspiration: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-59264280

➢ Idea:

    1) The BBC article about children being asked to describe their body image caught my eye, as eating disorders and body dysmorphia are one of the main modern issues of Gen Z. The world has recently started prioritising image over contents, which has undoubtedly caused mental health problems among teenagers.

An opening title sequence from a dystopian drama could be created, relying on this idea. It can be based on the theme of "pretty privilege" being something, allowing people to access certain facilities, places, maybe schools and jobs. It can be presented through a perspective of a teenage girl, having her usual morning routine. That might include waking up and weighing herself, doing a lot of make-up etc. (When going to the kitchen she might notice an empty box of chocolates in her sister's room). Through long and mid-shots a girl can have breakfast with her family (something like water with lemon and an apple) with her mom saying that they're planning to go to a fancy dinner that night. It might lead to the woman measuring her children’s waists, hips and one of the kids suddenly not fitting in the standard. There can be an argument after that. The scene can finish on the main character's POV shot - her fainting, falling on the floor and capturing the mom and the sister in a blurry focus form a floor-angle shot.

The main focus can be on the dialogues (absurd phrases about the importance of one's image) + close-ups on such details, like thin collarbones, pale skin, maybe awards for "Best Body Proportions of the Year" etc.

There would be no issue filming it in one's house, as it doesn't need require any unusual props or fancy locations.

2) The same idea can be developed through a series of close-ups and tracking shots of the teenage girl getting ready to go out. She might be acting happy, listening to music in her headphones and dancing, although such things like her measuring the waist, drinking some pills, putting a corset on will make the audience realise something is not right. There can be an over the shoulder shot of her receiving a text from her mom: "Don't forget the appetite suppressants", followed by a mirror shot of her taking the headphones of and screaming "I've already drunk 3 today". Basically, the previous idea was the morning of this day, while this one - the evening of the fancy dinner.

➢ Inspiration: "Abducted in plain sight", directed by Skye Borgman (Netflix documentary)

➢ Idea:

    2) The trailer to this documentary gave me an idea of creating an opening title sequence to a horror/thriller movie. The Netfllix film itself is about a story of an adolescent girl, who gets abducted by her father (a crime, noticed by the neighbours of this family).

The title sequence can begin with a close-up to a steak being fried by a man. From the very start the visual should be accompanied by contrapuntal background music ( an upbeat, cheerful tune). For the first +- 10 seconds the audience will be observing the male character, cooking, dancing and overall enjoying himself. It should then be followed by a mid shot, where the selective focus draws the viewers' attention to the man, but allows to see something moving at the background (a girl waking up, strapped to a chair). A close-up of the male cutting vegetables will be the first turning point, as the girl suddenly stars trying to scream (having tape on her mouth) and he accidentally cuts himself. It makes him angry for a moment, but he doesn't even turn around to look at her. Instead he calmly starts setting the table, still dancing to the background music. During the "bridge" of the tune, he takes the chair with the girl and moves her closer to the table with food (so that the image of him dragging the chair is parallel to a percussion progression, for example). Close-ups on the details will introduce the audience to the girl (capturing her hands, that are tied, her smudged make-up etc.). The sequence will finish on the sudden knock on the door, followed by a POV shot (from the girl's perspective) of the man approaching her and putting a black bag on her head.
